Xiaomi Emerges as Diplomatic Tech Gift Amid China-U.S. Rivalry
Chinese smartphone Maker Xiaomi has entered the realm of diplomatic signaling, with President Xi Jinping presenting its devices as state gifts to foreign leaders. The move underscores China's push to showcase its domestic tech prowess amid ongoing geopolitical tensions with the U.S.
Last weekend, Xi gifted Xiaomi handsets to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung—the first confirmed instance of the brand being used in such exchanges. Notably, the accompanying interpreter highlighted the South Korean-made displays, adding a LAYER of regional economic diplomacy to the gesture.
This follows Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's recent praise for a Huawei smartphone reportedly gifted by Xi, which he dubbed "the best phone in the world." Analysts interpret these moves as strategic demonstrations of China's technological self-sufficiency. "The Xiaomi smartphone gift-giving is significant in both tech diplomacy and national pride," said Su Lian Jye of Omdia.
